Two Tree Island is situated on the north bank of the River Thames and just a short walk from Leigh railways station, The island was reclaimed from the sea some time during the 1700s when a wall was built around the marshes. Between about 1930 and 1970 Southend Council used the area as a landfill site for the town's rubbish and during that time almost no public access was permitted.
The eastern end of the island forms part of the Leigh National Nature Reserve and has been a Mecca for birdwatchers for many years.
In all, the area consists of about 265 hectares of grassland, scrub, intertidal mudflats, a lagoon and some reed beds.
